Child-Centered Play Therapy: A Closer Look

  • Non-directive child-centered play therapy (CCPT) is a structured therapeutic approach that leverages children's natural communication and learning processes.
  • Therapists utilize play therapy to help children articulate their concerns when verbal expression is challenging.
  • In play therapy, toys serve as the child's words, and play becomes their language.
  • Developed in the early 20th century, play therapy involves therapists guiding children to address and resolve their own issues.
  • By engaging in play therapy, children improve communication, express emotions, adjust behavior, enhance problem-solving skills, and develop relational abilities.
  • Play offers children a safe space to explore their feelings and express thoughts appropriate to their development.
  • Play therapy is recommended for children aged 2-12, though teenagers and adults have also benefited from play techniques.
  • Research shows the effectiveness of play therapy in addressing various social, emotional, behavioral, and learning difficulties.
  • Children dealing with life stressors like divorce, death, relocation, illness, abuse, violence, or disasters can benefit from play therapy.
  • On average, a child may need around 20 weekly play therapy sessions, with parental involvement enhancing the process according to research.

Introduction to Play Therapy

Teleplay Therapy

Teleplay Therapy has all the benefits of face-to-face play therapy in the playroom but is done over an online telehealth platform.  This allows children who cannot access a play therapist face to face the opportunity to participate in play therapy in their own home, school or Kindy.

You may feel reluctant at first but rest assured young children are amazing at forming connections and relationships over an online platform and telehealth offers the same amazing benefits of play therapy.

Your play therapist Alison will email you more information and a link to your own telehealth appointment after the first initial consultation.  Telehealth can be accessed through schools, kindys and at home, and Alison has been doing teleplay therapy sessions for 12months successfully and with great results.  Minimal set up is required and no direct supervision is needed, just a safe person close by if needed for support.  The minimal requirements are a phone, computer or tablet with access to the internet and a camera.

Outreach Child-Centered Play Therapy

At Little Life Warriors Play Therapy we endeavor to make access to play therapy flexible to meet your child's and family's needs and schedule.  Child-Centered Play therapy can be accessed through our outreach service in Bundaberg and surrounds.  Your play therapist Alison can visit your child's home, school or kindergarten for play therapy.

Alison brings with her the resources required and only needs a small area to work in with your child, no direct supervision is needed by teachers or educators.  Outreach Play Therapy works especially well for families unable to come into the playroom due to work or family commitments, or do not have transport.  Another amazing benefit of this service is that Alison can work with your child's teacher or yourself on strategies to use athome and school/Kindy.
